I wish I was there

Palm Court at Villa Hassler hotel

The superb garden of Villa Hassler hotel in Rome, just above Spanish Steps, will be open to the general public soon. I always loved a white flowers-garden, especially in the evening the flowers can still be seen and become magic, as the stars and the moon in the sky.

Hassler Hotel Rome
The view from the 5 stars boutique Hotel is one of the best in the world,
with the new terrace being built it will be 360 degrees view.

The Penthouse suite has a private large terrace, and is furnished with antique pieces including a 1780 desk,  paintings from the school of Tintoretto, Venetian mirrors, opulent chandeliers and Louis XV chairs. The large outdoor terrace overlooks the city and is ideal for private sunbathing, cocktails with friends or an intimate romantic dinner.

Presidential suite

A room with graphic black and white rug and contemporary patterns on the chairs,
from the windows...glorious sunsets every evening!

Fewer and fewer family-run luxury hotels remain in the world, the Hassler is the only one left in Rome.

Looking forward to go back, even just for an aperitivo!

Movie director Coppola returns to Italy

Five years to restore a 19th-century mansion, named Palazzo Margherita, and now finally famous movie director Francis Ford Coppola has another luxury hotel to add to the four others, this time in the Basilicata region, Southern Italy, in the same town, Bernalda, from where his grandfather immigrated to America. The hotel is situated on the town central square, with large front doors opening to a courtyard followed by a large garden with a swimming pool.
To restore and decorate the mansion Coppola asked the acclaimed French designer Jacques Grange to help, but he also asked his family to contribute to decorate the nine bedrooms in their personal favorite style so the rooms are very different from each other and create the feeling of entering a private home with lots of personality.

All bedrooms have hand-painted  walls and ceilings, sometimes with trompe l’oeil
as in the Sofia room, adorned with  delicate trellis.

mag0212coppolah
Another corner of the Sofia room. As you can see Sofia Coppola and Jacques Grange
wanted to create a summer atmosphere, with pale, fresh colors and light wicker furniture.

mag0212coppolah
Sheer curtains flowing in the breeze and leading to the terrace in Francis Ford Coppola suite,
in a more exotic style recalling Tunisia and Morocco.
Can you imagine waking up in this room?

A common area, with walls covered in a rich Arts and Crafts Le Manach  fabric
and dark ruby Murano chandelier, where to drink coffee and read the paper during the day.

mag0212coppolah
Some rooms bring us back in time like in this image, have you noticed
the simple bouquet of flowers, coming directly from the garden and casually arranged?

Hand painted walls and ceilings are a feature of the whole hotel. Every detail was studied carefully, amenities and comfort abound, heated floors, media equipment, large pool, great common areas to relax, beautiful gardens…

A stunning Murano chandelier shines against faux marble walls.

mag0212coppolah
Again a “new” sofa straight from the “past” and a simple arrangement of gladioli on a whimsical coffee table. Hand painted walls look like luxurious wallpaper.
(Funny that we say of a real rose “It looks like it is made of silk”
and of a fake one “It looks real”…just came to my mind after writing the above).

For Coppola the Palazzo Margherita is about family and in fact his daughter Sofia got married there last summer. In an interview she said: "It was such a great setting, our friends all gathered in the garden, and we had a small ceremony at the end of a trellis walk with rosé from my father-in-law's winery, Château Thuerry and Prosecco at the bar after."

Francis Coppola added: "When you are there, you get the feeling that you are in a real place, in the palazzo you are in heaven. You walk out the door and there is real Italy. In the evening, everyone is out, there are children everywhere. It feels very safe, and I find it a very pleasant and authentic experience."
I agree with him, even if most tourists from around the world prefer Tuscany as an Italian destination, there are many more places to visit in that country, equally beautiful or sometimes  giving you even more the true Italian life experience, like in this, till now unknown to me, small rustic town of Bernalda.

Great escapes

A dream travel book was published by Taschen and quoting from Taschen books  website:

“To travel through Italy is as close as one gets to being in paradise.  For centuries, writers, artists, architects and merchants have been drawn here, inspired by the beauty of Venice, Florence, Naples and Rome. Countless books, paintings, poems and sculptures are evidence of its undying appeal, and over the past 60 years, the country has become one of the world's top travel and holiday destinations. The loveliness of Italy—its architecture, landscapes, culture and food (some of the world’s finest!) — if not eternal, is certainly enduring, and the easy-going and relaxed Italian lifestyle, il dolce far niente, is still unrivaled.”

Taschen books Great Escapes Italy

The latest of the series Great Escapes, an interesting mix of travel guide and interior design, talks about Italy and it is full of travel inspiration.

Taschen books Great Escapes Italy

In this book you can find amazing destinations from Lake Como in the North to Amalfi coast and the Aeolian Islands in the South.

Taschen books Great Escapes Italy

The book is full of stunning images of resorts and legendary hotels full of atmosphere where movies were shot, famous love stories took place, weddings are  celebrated.

If only the walls could talk…

I love Opera, do you?

If you love Opera, Symphony, Ballet, you must love Teatro alla Scala and now there is
a new Hotel to love, called Milano Scala.
The project by Cibic&Partners is located in the Brera area, in the center of Milan, a few steps from the world famous theatre. An existing building, from the end of XIX century, was renovated creating 62 rooms, each different from the other but all with the common theme of Opera lirica. You can have meals at the restaurant "La Traviata" and choose the bedroom suite "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" or the Suite "Carmen", the Suite "La Boheme" or another favorite subject, all bedrooms will have some blown up images related to La Scala performances.
I can spot Maria Callas below, on a swing.

Not much privacy here though...

I love the use of the "Rosso Scala" color as an accent and for the luxurious drapes, the same color used for the velvet chairs in the theatre.

It is a gorgeous Hotel but it is important to note that this is also a Green Hotel, because the project was carefully studied to permit eco-sustainability, great insulation, they even excavated underground to be able to heat and to cool the building with a sophisticated technique using ground water. The rooms of course are lit by LED lighting, the bathroom accessories are all biodegradable, faucets and toilets have water saving devices and even the paper used in the hotel and for advertising is certified by the Forest Steward Council.  For mobility they offer hybrid courtesy cars and since Milan has a very efficient service of bike-sharing, called BikeMI, you are assured that even if in a luxury hotel your footprint is kept low.

Finally a beautiful terrace to enjoy a break, drink a Rabarbaro Zucca and  look at the
360 degrees view of Milan, weather permitting, of course.

Now tell us...do you love Opera, symphony, ballet?
What is your favorite piece or your favorite composer, dancer or singer?

Alice in Bloggerland

Alice mania: March 5th, 2010 Tim Burton's movie, from the masterpiece of Lewis Carroll "Alice in Wonderland" will be in theatres around the world. Extraordinary characters and worlds where logic is reversed, a dream or reality?
On the same theme just recently a new Hotel was inaugurated in Milan by Moschino Maison (to see my previous post on Moschino click here) and what better timing to open a whimsical and fun Hotel than for the Milanese Fashion Week.

Here is Alice trying to have a preview of the Hotel peeking through the rabbit hole...let's follow her...

The 1840 building, the first train station in Milan, was restored maintaining intact the original architecture.

maison-moschino-02
Clouds on the ceiling create light in the foyer so immediately Alice (and the visitors) are taken into a fantasy world.

maison-moschino-01
I believe she would be perfectly happy to sleep here in between adventures, don't you agree?

maison-moschino-05
Alice would probably also feel comfortable here, where the furniture are out of scale and a gigantic tea cup becomes a table.

maison-moschino-0004
She would awake in the morning looking at the chandelier, made of real (dream on) cookies and candies.

Alice2
And the Queen of Hearts?

maison-moschino-06
Would she relax here? Hopefully she will be more mellow...who would not like to sleep every night on a bed made of roses?

3-2-2010 12-24-42 PM
Or hearts will make her happier? Who knows, she is such a character!

3-3-2010 12-17-52 PM
The White Queen

maison-moschino-0001
Would she like this amazing bedroom? It is my favorite one.

The Mad Hatter?

maison-moschino-04
Would he have a sound zzzzleep in this room?

3-3-2010 12-12-34 PM
The Cheshire cat

3-2-2010 12-26-39 PM
I am sure the Cat will continue to smile in this bedroom.

3-1-2010 5-48-07 PM
The White Rabbit?

maison-moschino-11
He perhaps will stop running around and find the perfect sleep in this Blue Room? Of course someone will have to wake him up on time!

And finally...who should sleep in this enchanted forest but at the same time very functional room?

What a dream! Or is it reality?
